Femme Africa Solidarite (FAS) mission to Burundi, Rwanda and Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) , due to take place from July 5th to August 4th 2010 is the second phase of the project “National Action Plans for the Implementation of UNSCR 1325 in the Great Lakes Region”. A series of workshops will be organized in each of the three countries to review and devise sexo-specific indicators to measure gender sensitive policies and budgets in peace building and post conflict reconstruction. The first phase of the project has enabled the validation of the action plan, the creation of a steering committee, and the facilitation of greater ownership of the project by the primary target group in each of the 3 countries. Following encouraging signs of stabilization of the security situation in the Great Lakes and the electoral processes scheduled in Burundi in 2010 and in DRC in 2011, this project aims to create a platform for a share of information and a harmonization of practices.
The overall objective of this project is to contribute to a new social order guaranteeing gender equality following gender mainstreaming in all matters of peace and security, towards equitable and sustainable development.
The UN Security Council 1325 calls on member states to take all necessary measures to protect the rights of women and girls in armed conflict , to enable the full participation of women in instances of decision making and to take the necessary measures to ensure gender equality in peace building and peacekeeping.
