FAS on 11th African Union Summit

Accra, GNA - African Civil Society Organisations on Thursday called on African leaders to use the 11th African Union Summit in Egypt to take a decisive decision on the formation of a government of United States of Africa.

"This is a great opportunity for continental integration that will benefit the African people. The idea is that the government will work on the principle of shared values and common interests that will ensure the collective self-development of the African people," Mrs. Bineta Diop, Executive Director of Femmes Africa Solidarite (FAS), a non-governmental organisation, stated in a statement to the Ghana News Agency in Accra.

She said the government would lead to adherence to the rule of law; popular participation in governance; respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms; and transparency in public policy making.

She said the ultimate goal of the Government of the African Union would be to fulfil political and economic integration which should lead to the transformation of African countries' social, political and economic structures to those that conformed to the accepted world governance standards.

Mrs. Diop said formation of the Government of the African Union would be a better mechanism for addressing the proliferation of conflicts on the continent than the present principle of "non interference in internal matters" of individual governments even when one could see the negative consequences of the conflicts.

On the issue of Small Arms and Light Weapons, Mrs. Diop said she considered the problem as a serious impediment to Africa's social and economic development.
