Global Open Day on Women Peace and Security in New York

OCTOBER 21st, 2010 - NEW YORK

UNIFEM held a Global Open Day on Women, Peace and Security in New York, one event that has taken place in more than 20 post-conflict countries from June to August 2010. This initiative was created to enable direct dialogue between women's peace-building organizations, women community leaders and senior UN leadership at the country level.

Again, it was a great opportunity to listen to women's priorities in terms of their post conflict experiences and take a closer look at what was being done in the implementation of 1325 ahead of the 10th anniversary of this important legislation.

Madame Diop, FAS Executive Director, took part in the event as representative of the Civil Society Advisory Group (CSAG) to the United Nations (UN) on United Nations Security Council (UNSCR) 1325 which she co-chairs with H.E Ms Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland and President of Realizing Rights: The Ethical Globalization Initiative.

She explained that these Global Open Days mark an important achievement as they underscore the centrality and criticality of women's voices for effective peacebuilding and said that they were an innovative way for women peacebuilders across the world to penetrate the UN apparatus and to be given an opportunity to articulate their needs and exchange their experiences in conflict and post-conflict situations.

Finally, she underlined that the spirit embodied by the Open Days must be translated into deeds, most especially ensuring accountability to women throughout the peace building processes.
