An Arria Formula in the UN Security Council on Lessons Learned on SCR 1325 for Improving Impact on the Ground

The 26th October 2010, the Security Council will hold an Open Debate to mark the 10th anniversary of the adoption of Security Council resolution 1325 (2000) on "Women, Peace and Security". Member States, the UN system, international and regional organisations and civil society have also been invited to make concrete commitments to action which address some of the key challenges and gaps in the implementation of resolution 1325 (2000).

To complement this debate the Permanent Missions of Australia, Mexico and the United Kingdom hosted an Arria Formula meeting, the 19th October 2010, to assess what impact resolution 1325 has had in conflict- affected countries over the past 10 years, what measures have been met with success and to identify where additional work is needed.

During the Arria Formula meeting, all speakers emphasized the need for the Security Council to provide a more systematic system of implementation to increased financing for women peace and security.

Council members promised to work together with civil society to enhance peace and security for women and recognized the need for the endorsement of indicators and also observed that the new UN women would play a vital role in advancing peace and security for women.
