FAS is part of the Conference of
Non-Governmental Organizations in Consultative Relationship with the United
Nations (CONGO), which is an umbrella association of NGOs working to facilitate
the participation of civil society groups in UN debates and decisions to ensure
that their expertise is incorporated into the work of the UN. FAS is regularly invited to
participate in CONGO
meetings in Geneva, and FAS's Executive Director
has also attended CONGO board
meetings in New York.
FAS is also part of a sub-committee of CONGO called the NGO Committee on
the Status of Women (NGO CSW), which monitors the implementation of
international instruments concerning women . The NGO CSW coordinates the
Working Group on Peace, which deals specifically with the implementation of
international instruments that focus on women's role in peace and security
initiatives.
FAS is co-chair of the Working Group on Peace, based in Geneva, which monitors the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1325. The objectives of the Working Group are defined in its mission statement of July 2001 as being: to promote and protect the human rights of women and girls on issues relating specifically to peace and security.
Since 2000, FAS has participated in over 25 meetings organized by the Working
Group, focusing on gender and peace issues which relate to Security Council Resolution 1325 and the CEDAW. It has also arranged annual events on International Women's Day (8 March), organized panels during the Human Rights Council (HRC) and drafted joint statements for the HRC and its Sub-commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights.
The Working Group on Women, Peace and Security was formed in May 2000 to advocate for a UN Security Council Resolution on
women, peace and security.
Since the adoption of Security Council Resolution 1325, the Working Group, which is based in New York, advocates for the full and rapid implementation of the resolution's promises.
FAS has an office in New York, which enables it to participate in the meetings of the Working Group alongside other organizations.
