
PanAfrican Centre for Gender, Peace and Development, Dakar, Senegal
The PanAfrican Centre has already organized several short courses in partnership with the University for Peace (UPEACE), based in Costa Rica. It is hoped that this partnership will lead to the creation of a Master degree programme in gender and peacebuilding, which will be offered in conjunction with the University of Cheikh Anta Diop in Dakar.
A second short course on Gender and Conflict: Human Rights and Transitional Justice took place at Mbodiène, Senegal, in April 2007.
The PanAfrican Centre also organises the African Gender Forum, as well as the African Gender Award.
Events
The first African Gender
Forum took place in May 2005 in Dakar, Senegal, and was the occasion for the official launch of the PanAfrican Centre for Gender,
Peace and Development. It was organized by FAS, in conjunction with the Arab International Women's Forum, in anticipation of the formal launch of the Gender is my Agenda Campaign.
The African Gender Award is given every two years to an African leader who has demonstrated outstanding achievements in implementing gender-sensitive measures that promote peace and development within his or her country.
The first African Gender Award was presented to President Abdoulaye Wade of Senegal and President Thabo Mbeki of South Africa in May 2005, in recognition of their work to promote gender equality and gender mainstreaming in the African Union. Their achievements were celebrated at a ceremony held on 2 May 2005.

The 2007 African Gender Award, will be presented to H.E. President Paul Kagame of Rwanda in Dakar, Senegal, in June 2007.
