
Femmes Africa Solidarité (FAS) has an unpaid internship position in its International Secretariat in Geneva, Switzerland.
FAS aims to create strengthen and promote the leading role of women in the prevention, management and resolution of conflicts on the African continent. The candidate should be interested in actively participating in gender based conflict resolution and peace building in Africa.
Under the general supervision of the Executive Director of FAS, together with the Coordinator of the Geneva International Secretariat, the staff of the Regional Office in Dakar, Senegal and the Liaison Office in New York, USA, the staff member will be responsible for fundraising, maintaining good relationships with donors and producing narrative reports.
The staff member will also assist with administrative and general office duties at the International Secretariat, such as supporting with the organization of conferences.
Principal duties include, but are not limited to:
- Actively participating in fundraising activities; including: conducting research, analysis and
information synthesis on issues related to gender, peace and development;
- Reviewing and analysing women's best practices in conflict and post-conflict situations in Africa;
- Drafting project proposals, writing to donors, preparing budgets, following up on funding
progress and relationships, establishing partnerships with potential donor organisations
or governments;
- Producing written reports and summaries of the proceedings and outcomes of FAS's activities;
- Assisting in developing and maintaining good working relations with United Nations agencies,
the African Union, the Economic Commission for Africa, the African Women's Committee
on Peace and Development, international organisations, non-governmental organisations,
civil society organisations and other partners;
- Maintaining contacts with officials and representatives of governments and partner NGOs
and providing support in the definition of cooperation arrangements;
- Providing support to and liaising with FAS offices, members, and partners in order to provide
timely follow-up;
- Developing electronic information storage and retrieval systems documenting FAS's history
of collaboration with United Nations agencies, international organisations, governments and
other partners;
- Helping to organise conferences and meetings, including meetings of the Executive Board
and the General Assembly, and ensuring that support is provided;
- Assisting the Executive Director and FAS staff with other tasks as required.
- Pursuing or completed university degree in international relations, human rights, gender studies, socio-economic development or related fields;
- Strong experience in fundraising activities and contact with donors;
- Evidence of strategic thinking and proven ability to organise, plan and prioritise work;
- Knowledge of computer applications;
- Fluency in French and English;
- Ability to work in a team and independently.
Internships at Femmes Africa Solidarité are challenging and highly rewarding. Interns should expect to gain: practical skills, a greater understanding of the daily running of an international NGO and peace initiatives in Africa, as well as the opportunity to work alongside international organisations and UN agencies based in Geneva.
The internship period must be at least 6 months and can be extended by mutual consent.
Selected candidates are expected to make their personal arrangement for travel to Switzerland, board, lodging and other expenses while serving as interns, as the position is unpaid.
FAS could be of assistance in helping to locate affordable accommodation.
