Sudanese women advocate at the UN CSW

At this year's 53rd session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (UNCSW) from March 2nd to March 13th 2009, FAS has organised parallel events aimed at raising awareness of the plight of Sudanese women and bring to the international fora their advocacy message.

Four panel discussions have been organised from March 2-6th, 2009 at which Sudanese women from Darfur and the Diaspora will discuss their difficulties and campaign for the international community to help them.

The purpose of the panels is to discuss the scope of the challenges posed by discrimination, violence against women, and to achieve an effective collaboration between the different fieldwork actors - UN agencies, civil society organisations and Governments. They mainly revolve around partnership, networking, media contact and high level advocacy.

The panellists attended the January 2009 2nd Sudanese Women's Forum on Darfur (SWOFOD) organised by FAS in collaboration with the Realizing Rights, the Gender is My Gender Campaign Network, and supported by DFID and Norway. One of the outcome documents was the advocacy document called ‘Declaration on Darfur' made by the more than 150 participants to be used to highlight their situation at international fora.

In keeping with this year's UN CSW: "The equal sharing of responsibilities between women and men, including care giving in the context of HIV/AIDS", FAS has one panel on March 3 to look at the Special vulnerability of Darfuri women to HIV/AIDS and what role can play in helping to arrest the situation.

The CSW was established in 1946.  It is a part of the UN Economic Social and Cultural Committee (ECOSOC) and is the principal global policymaking body on gender equality and the advancement of women. The CSW meets each year at the UN in New York and reports to ECOSOC on issues relating to gender.
