UN Commission on the Status of Women

FAS attends the annual sessions of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), whose main purpose is to monitor the process of implementing the proposals of the Beijing Declaration, also known as Beijing +10. The CSW also organizes panel discussions, training sessions and conferences. The annual meeting of the CSW provides an important opportunity for FAS to advocate for the needs of African women and connect with other women's organizations from around the world. FAS has had the rare opportunity to address the entire assembly in plenary sessions. In its session in March 2004, the CSW Division on the Advancement of Women (DAW) singled out MARWOPNET as an effective network for the advancement of peace in the Mano River region and invited FAS to attend its meetings.

In order to highlight the challenges faced by women living in conflict zones, FAS regularly sponsors its members to attend these meetings so that they can share their experiences with other NGOs and disseminate best practices to a wide international audience. At the fifty-first session of the CSW, which took place from 26 February to 9 March 2007, FAS sponsored the participation of women representatives from Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

UN Human Rights Council

The Human Rights Council (HRC) is a forum for FAS to advocate on behalf of African women on more general issues regarding their human rights. The transformation in 2006 of the Commission on Human Rights into the HRC was the opportunity to lobby for the integration of a gender perspective in the structure and work of the Council to ensure that women's concerns are fully addressed.
