Ms. Diop featured as leader in the “Swiss 100”

Ms. Bineta Diop, current Board President of Femmes Africa Solidarité (FAS) and formerly FAS Executive Director for the past 15 years, is featured today in the annual special edition of the Swiss magazine « Hebdo » as one of the top 100 personalities in the country. This nomination follows the one she already obtained last year with the “Time 100” by Time Magazine.

Ms. Diop is listed in the category of “those who manage and lead”, along with 31 other leaders, including 6 other women who are mainly involved in the private sector and in politics. Other categories of this “Swiss 100”are “promising talents”, “scientists”, “artists” and “builders”. This special edition started in 2005 and has become a reference in Switzerland. In the article devoted to her under the title “The other peace dove”, Ms. Diop refers to the 2001 Mano River episode in West Africa that allowed bringing Heads of state of the region back into discussion; an initiative rewarded at the time by the Human Rights Price of the UN General Assembly. She also recalls the important “regulator” role of women in African societies and stresses the need of ensuring that their voices being heard during peace processes, which is recognized as one of FAS’ main concerns. Ms. Diop concludes by expressing hope that Switzerland will finally recognize the work done by FAS and will join current FAS donors such as the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and the Governments of Finland and Norway.

Kenya: The passing away of Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wangari MAATHAI
"The Legacy of Wangari Maathai to African Women."

"Africa has lost today one of its greatest daughters. Wangari was the champion of the environmental cause, to which she brought the attention of the Continent when nobody was talking about this great challenge. She worked tirelessly for the rural women, demanding African leaders to address climate change. She was a Human Rights defender who risked her life for ordinary people. As African women, we have been proud of her recognition with the Nobel Peace Prize. We have also supported her leadership as President of the Economic, Social and Cultural Council of the African Union. We are sure that the young women and men she mentored are ready to continue her fight for climate justice. However, her leadership, guidance and commitment will be missed. She was a visionary and has been an inspiration for all of us, and will continue to be for generations to come."
